Learning - Grade 5

Grade 5 is a time when students take many significant steps toward becoming more independent. At Upper Ferntree Gully PS we provide a range of programs to assist children in the senior years of primary school to reach their full potential.

Students get the opportunity to build close and supportive relationships with their peers and develop their self-confidence.

We participate in a range of extra curricula programs including, The Forest Classroom, the Young Leaders Conference and Inter-School sport teams. At the Forest Classroom, students spend time at the Dandenong Ranges National Park immersed in nature,  and are provided with opportunities to explore and better understand their local area.

Grade 5 students are encouraged to develop their academic, social and emotional skills. Our supportive classrooms allow for students to explore new ideas, take risks and give each other help and guidance through-out all areas of the curriculum.

Our strong transition program to assist students to move to high school confidently begins in year 7. We have strong ties with the local high school and students have the opportunity to visit and participate in transition days where they experience high school subjects and activities.

Literacy occurs every day in the classrooms. We emphasise the importance of all students achieving in reading and writing. We use a variety fo approaches to cater for all learners.

These include:

  • Use Writing Rainbow Strategies when writing- this involves planning, a draft, edit, publish, celebrate and conference
