Learning - Foundation

Foundation at Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School is the beginning of students developing their independence and self-confidence as they move from being Kinder kids to school children.


Developing the students Literacy understanding is a daily focus within the Foundation classroom. We are constantly developing the student?s skills and understanding in all areas of reading, writing, oral language and spelling.

We are consistently developing the student?s fluency and reasoning to develop a deeper understanding of the content and strategies. Mathematics is a great way to use hands on learning to aid the students in developing and consolidating skills.

Oral Language:

Within the Foundation year of schooling an important focus is developing the Oral Language of the students. At Upper Ferntree Gully our Foundation students interact in the Oral Language Centre that provides a space for students to develop their social interaction and to work together to complete tasks.

Inquiry Units: 

Before they begin each unit, students are immersed in the real world application of what they will be learning. Students complete a pre-test to find out what they already know, students then develop questions to be answered throughout the unit.

Inquiry Units are based around concepts that help students to question and develop deep understandings of the world around them.
