Learning - Grade 4

Grade 4 at Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School is where students take responsibility for their learning. They use their diaries regularly and make choices about their learning. They set learning goals and identify the challenges they face when learning and develop strategies to overcome them.


Literacy occurs every day in the classrooms. We emphasise the importance of all students achieving in reading and writing. We use a variety fo approaches to cater for all learners.

These include:

  • Use Writing Rainbow Strategies when writing- this involves planning, a draft, edit, publish, celebrate and conference
  • Writer's Notebook is used to give students the opportunity to develop 'Seeds' to help their writing grow.
  • Modelled reading and writing sessions
  • Oral language development through circle time
  • CAFE reading strategies
  • Book clubs


We are consistently developing the student?s fluency and reasoning to develop a deeper understanding of the content and strategies. Mathematics is a great way to use hands on learning to aid the students in developing and consolidating skills.

Inquiry Learning:

Before they begin each unit, students are immersed in the real world application of what they will be learning. Students complete a pre-test to find out what they already know, students then develop questions to be answered throughout the unit.

Inquiry Units are based around concepts that help students to question and develop deep understandings of the world around them.
